Autodesk 3ds Max 2011 coming next month

Autodesk has announced this year’s refresh of its software offer which includes a new version of the popular modeling, animation, rendering and compositing application known as 3ds Max (formerly 3D Studio MAX). As stated by its maker, 3ds Max 2011 comes with the following additions:
- Slate, a new node-based material editor that enables artists to more easily visualize and edit material component relationships
- Quicksilver hardware renderer, a new multithreaded rendering engine that uses both the central processing unit (CPU) and the graphics processing unit (GPU), and can achieve up to 10 times faster rendering than traditional techniques on common graphics cards
- Ability to view many 3ds Max texture maps and materials in the viewport to help develop and refine scenes in a higher-fidelity interactive display environment — without the constant need to re-render
- Extended Graphite modeling and Viewport Canvas toolsets for 3D and 2D painting of textures directly in the viewport, along with the ability to paint with object brushes to help create geometry within a scene
- Ability to non-destructively layer local edits on top of referenced content, helping artists to collaborate more efficiently
- 3ds Max Composite, a full-featured, high dynamic range (HDR)–capable compositor, based on technology from Autodesk Toxik software

Top 10 Things that JavaScript Got Wrong

JavaScript, if only by default, is one of the most popular programming languages available. Over the years, it’s been labeled as a nightmare to work with, and, to some extent, this is true! However, more often than not, what people mean to say is that the DOM API is a nightmare. Nevertheless, there are a handful of flat-out errors in the language.
15 Fantastic Finds on the Google Code Repository

Google Code Repository is a section of Google that, just like SourceForge, allows developers to upload their code for others to use under license. The repository was launched in 2006 and after searching through its archives, I found a number of interesting scripts and other goodies that would be an asset in any website owner/website builder’s arsenal.
All the code examples below are free to download and use. They’re released under a GPL, BSD, MIT or Creative Commons license.
DOJ Cites Antitrust Issues with Google Book Settlement

The Department of Justice has raised antitrust concerns about the proposed book settlement between Google and publishers. The DOJ called the proposal “a bridge too far” that would give Google a monopoly, shutting out competitors like Amazon.com, and boosting Google’s search engine. The DOJ wants the court to order more discussions.
The Department of Justice believes significant antitrust, class certification, and copyright issues remain in the amended book settlement proposed by Google and publishing industry representatives in September. However, the government attorneys also said Thursday that the U.S. believes the parties have approached the effort in good faith.
Rich-Text Editors for 2010 and Beyond

Rich-Text Editors, inline content editors, WYSIWYG editors – or whatever you want to call them – are web applications that enable users to enter, edit and manipulate alphanumeric characters while visiting your website. Wherever you have a <textarea> form input on your site, chances are good that its usability could be improved with a Rich-Text Editor.
For example, your comment form is a great place to provide users with the ability to customize their responses with a few clicks of the mouse. RTEs help your visitors format and edit their web-based content by transforming an ordinary input field into a fully functional HTML editor.
40,000 More Chrome Extensions!

One thing that got lost in the commotion of the extensions launch is a feature that is near and dear to my heart: Google Chrome 4 now natively supports user scripts. Greasemonkey is a Firefox extension I wrote in 2004 that allows developers to customize web pages using simple JavaScript and it was the inspiration for some important parts of our extension system.

Facebook rewrites PHP runtime
A week ago, I let ya’ll know that the core team had been brought to ’s main campus. That team were forced to sign NDA’s, and taken to a very quiet, secluded meeting room where some cool new Facebook-backed open source project was described.
Well, I was able to put all the pieces together on this one, finally, and I now understand exactly what is up: Facebook has rewritten the PHP runtime from scratch. This coming Tuesday, they will make a big announcement around this project, and will make it available as open source software. I’m not really sure of any of the details of the project, but I do know that Facebook hired someone two years ago to do this, and I’m relatively sure this was a one-man project during that entire time.
